Often called the “silent killer,” carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless gas that can cause serious illness or death. CO is a poisonous gas that can be produced by fuel-burning appliances and equipment, including furnaces, fireplaces, water heaters, gas stoves and generators. Exposure to CO can cause symptoms such as headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea and shortness of breath, and can lead to loss of consciousness or death. Without a working CO alarm, dangerous levels of the gas can go undetected.
During Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week, Tarbutt Fire DEpartment (TFD) is connecting with residents to share important safety tips and information about Ontario’s updated CO alarm requirements.
Starting January 1, 2026, carbon monoxide (CO) alarms must be installed on every storey of a home and outside all sleeping areas. CO alarms are required if a home has a fuel‑burning appliance such as a water heater, furnace, or gas stove, or features like a fireplace or an attached garage.
Key safety precautions: Install CO alarms as required, test them monthly or according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and replace them as directed. Never ignore a CO alarm. If it sounds, leave the building immediately and call 911 from outside.
